چکیده

I read with interest the article by Scherrer et al. This research was largely advertised in a Swiss television show, 36.9, on April 4, 2012. In this show, it was clearly evident that children conceived by assisted reproduction techniques were informed of the hypothesis of the study before the measurements, that they were at risk to be victims of heart infarction at a very young age, and that their vascular system and pulmonary pressure might be a problem. In my opinion, the authors should consider the possibility that informing the children and their parents might have confounded the results. For example, this action might have induced emotional stress that altered vascular function. I thank the authors for their interest in this clinically important topic. Two to 5% of children are born after assisted reproduction techniques in developed countries. As a randomized trial to avoid biases is obviously not conceivable, future research to eventually confirm these results will be important for the children born after assisted reproduction techniques and their families.

Right ventricular dysfunction in children and adolescents conceived by assisted reproductive technologies.

Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) predispose the offspring to vascular dysfunction, arterial hypertension, and hypoxic pulmonary hypertension. Recently, cardiac remodeling and dysfunction during fetal and early postnatal life have been reported in offspring of ART, but it is not known whether these cardiac alterations persist later in life and whether confounding factors contribute to th...

Neonatal outcomes of Offspring Conceived through in Vitro Fertilization

There has been a dramatic rise in the use of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART), including In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) throughout the world over the past three decades. Because they represent >1% of the birth cohorts in many developed countries, much attention is being paid to the health and well-being of ART children. Children born after assisted reproductive techniques (ART) have an in...

A Comparison of Postpartum Depression in Mothers Conceived by Assisted Reproductive Technology and Those Naturally Conceived

Objective It is thought that mothers who conceive via assisted reproductive technology (ART) may be at greater risk of postpartum depression (PPD) because of the problems and psychological stresses associated with ART treatment. The aim of the present study is to determine the occurrence of PPD among mothers conceiving via ART in comparison with mothers naturally conceiving, using Edinburgh Pos...
